ISLAMABAD: The FBI is sending a team to Pakistan as part of an investigation into links with a Chicago terror suspect, the U.S. Embassy said Tuesday.

The announcement came a day after the probe expanded to include a retired Pakistani army officer — highlighting long-held fears of Pakistan’s central role in global extremism.

David Coleman Headley, an American of Pakistani descent, was arrested in Chicago in October and accused of planning an attack on a Danish newspaper after it committed blasphemy.

On Monday, he also was accused of conducting extensive surveillance on potential targets in the Indian city of Mumbai before the terrorist attacks there in November 2008 that left 166 people dead.

The U.S. alleged charges said Headley, who changed his name from Daood Gilani, had attended militant training camps in Pakistan and conspired with members of the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba to launch terrorist attacks in India.
