Male sex hormones may explain why men who suffer from the hepatitis B liver disease are more likely to develop liver cancer than women, researchers in Taiwan have found.

In a paper published in Science Translational Medicine, the researchers said hepatitis B viruses attach themselves to receptors of the male sex hormone androgen before going on to damage liver tissue and cause cancer.

“The findings indicate that using drugs to destroy … androgen receptors could be a new way to battle liver cancer at an early stage,” they wrote.

Liver cancer is the fifth most common cancer and the third leading cause of global cancer death.

Hepatitis B virus infection, which is endemic in many Asian countries including China, is a leading cause of liver cancer and accounts for half of liver cancer cases worldwide.

Men are up to seven times more likely than women to develop liver cancer. Among hepatitis B virus carriers, men are up to three times more likely to develop liver cancer than women.

Led by Ming-Heng Wu at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences in National Cheng Kung University in Tainan, Taiwan, researchers found that hepatitis B viruses have a special DNA sequence which draws it to androgen receptors.

“The androgen receptors in liver cells bind to this sequence and trigger a cascade of damage to liver tissue,” they explained.

In their experiment, the researchers created mice that were infected with the hepatitis B virus and could easily develop liver tumors upon exposure to cancer-causing agents.

Some of these were genetically modified to be lacking in androgen receptors in their livers.

By week 22 in the experiment, more than 90 percent of those mice with androgen receptors had developed liver tumors compared to 27 percent of the mice without androgen receptors.

Tinkering with the receptors did not change overall androgen levels or leave any obvious toxic effects in the mice.

“Targeting the androgen receptor rather an androgen could be a promising therapy for liver cancer,” the researchers said.

Applications are open for the following three components of the Next Generation Leaders (NGL) programme:

ISOC Fellowship to the IETF

ISOC IGF Ambassadors

eLearning

Introduction

The Internet model of decentralized architecture and distributed responsibility for development, operation, and management has been the catalyst for boundless innovation and creativity. That model also creates important leadership opportunities, especially in those spaces where technology, policy, and business intersect.

As part of its mission and vision, the Internet Society is dedicated to cultivating a new generation of Internet leaders who will address the critical technology, policy, business, and education challenges that lie ahead.

The Internet Society Next Generation Leaders programme is a unique blend of coursework and practical experience to help prepare young professionals from around the world to become the next generation of Internet technology, policy, and business leaders.

A need for new Internet leaders

Today’s world has become increasingly complex and interconnected. With more than 1.5 billion people already online, the challenge remains to extend the benefits of the Internet to the billions more who can benefit from the economic, cultural, and educational opportunities the Internet provides.

The Next Generation Leaders Programme – Preparing young professionals from around the world to become the next generation of Internet technology, policy, and business leaders.

In order to be successful, the next generation of Internet leaders will require a wide range of skills in a variety of disciplines as well as the ability and experience to work with people at all levels of society.

Through the Next Generation Leaders programme, the Internet Society calls upon talented individuals who are committed to the ongoing expansion of a sustainable Internet that continues to be:

open for business, because its open platform spurs innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship;

based on open governance, because the open, inclusive transparent processes of the Internet model of development allows business, civil society and governments to work together; and

open to the public because a universally accessible Internet empowers citizens and enhances their social development.

Next Generation Leaders Programme

Are you a Next Generation Leader?

Each year, the Internet Society will accept a group of qualified young Internet professionals from academia, the public sector, industry, and civil society into its Next Generation Leaders programme. Candidates should be between the ages of 20 and 40 and demonstrate leadership potential in their chosen field. Individuals accepted into the programme will automatically become Global Members of the Internet Society.

The NGL Graduation Curriculum

The specialized coursework and high-level guidance that make up the Next Generation Leaders (NGL) programme will give graduates the opportunity to build a solid background in Internet governance, policy, and business. Blending academic study with practical, high-level experience, the programme will accelerate the careers of talented young Internet practitioners.

Programme entrants benefit from a flexible curriculum that allows them to choose to either first complete the academic component or enhance their Internet experience. Hands-on Internet experience can be gained through participating in ISOC’s representation programmes or demonstrating one’s own Internet-based professional history.

To graduate from the NGL programme, candidates must complete the academic component – the tailored ISOC NGL eLearning course, covering the essential topics required for effective interactions and relationships within the Internet ecosystem, as well as key concepts and emerging issues in Internet governance.

Entrants are also encouraged to apply for the Internet Society’s representation programmes, such as ISOC Ambassadorships to the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), the World Bank, and OECD, and the ISOC Fellowship to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). These unique international experiences will allow Internet Society Next Generation Leaders to:

accelerate their training in diplomatic skills,

master the drivers of Internet-based innovation and growth, and

experience the technical development of the Internet.

Once a year, an ISOC NGL Committee will choose the annual NGL graduates based on their performance in the eLearning component (compulsory), their professional history within the Internet ecosystem, and/or any involvement in other experiential components of the NGL (ISOC ambassadorships and fellowships). NGL graduates will receive an ISOC NGL Graduation Certificate.

The NGL Laureates Programme

The final phase of the programme is designed to recognize outstanding achievement.

Each year, all successful NGL graduates are eligible to submit a project proposal focussed on an Internet development issue within their own communities that align with one of ISOC’s Major Strategic Initiatives.

Three projects will be chosen. The respective project leaders will be invited to Geneva for a final, one-week course in Internet diplomacy.

The three project leaders will be recognized as the Next Generation Leaders programme laureates. They will receive an ISOC NGL Laureates Certificate and be rewarded with special opportunities to network with some of the Internet’s most respected leaders and to participate in special leadership events, and they may be encouraged to start new Internet Society Chapters in their communities.

CAIRO: Egypt’s leading cleric ordered a student to remove her face veil while he was visiting an academy linked to the Al Azhar University in Cairo, an Egyptian newspaper reported on Monday.

Mohammed Tantawi, Azhar’s Grand Imam, asked the student to take off her veil when he spotted her in a classroom, the daily Al-Mary al-Yowm reported, adding that the student complied, AFP reports.

Mr Tantawi reportedly said the niqab was a tradition, not an Islamic obligation.

The newspaper also reported that the Minister for Higher Education Hani Hilal decided to ban women wearing the niqab from entering university residences.

Most Muslim women in Egypt wear the hijab, a veil that covers the hair, but an increase in women wearing the niqab has apparently alarmed the government.

The ministry of religious endowments has distributed booklets in mosques against the practice.

On 25th May a news spread like fire across the Pakistan and it’s media of a 4 Inch human like alive alien found in it’s eastern city of Lahore.

According to the locals, during renovation of a house. Laborers were digging a room when they found a small 4 inch creature resembling humans. The creature was moving and jumping. Children present at the spot stoned the creature after which it got unconscious. Children closed the creature in a empty jar and this news spread like fire in a forest. People from far away and outskirts of the city came to see it.

Later, when the locals emptied the jar and got the creature out it’s skin got burned due to pouring out on hot bricks.

A man present at the occasion said: “The creature was moving like a fish.” When the scene got populated with people, locals buried the creature in a small hole in ground.

City officials not gave any statement about the issue and the news died of the media later on. It should be mentioned here that in April there was a rumor of UFO sighting in Lahore as well. Which was also not taken up by authorities to comment and the rumor died later on. Some people are quoting that this creature might have fallen down from that UFO.

Following is the video covered by local news channel about the Alien incident:

The creature shown in the video looks fake because after the incident no one even bothered to do any post mortem or check ups on it. It might be a plastic toy which can be found in the markets. Check out these two pictures, it looks clear that it was actually a toy. And a hoax played by the public which made everyone fool.

But over all the whole incident looks too fake to believe. We might not be sure whether it was real or fake but according to available facts it looks quite fake. Let’s wait and see what future brings to us.

Whats your verdict? Do you guys think it was a hoax or not?
